To show you I know too damn much about Southern politicans, I'd rather have George Wallace than David Duke, too. Wallace was an interesting figure, fairly progressive before white southerners wanted strong racist leaders, and I think his final apologies to blacks was sincere. Here's a bit from Wikipedia that rings true to me:
Wallace rose to power on the politics of racism, but he was not simply a racist. A lawyer recalls, "Judge George Wallace was the most liberal judge that I had ever practiced law in front of. He was the first judge in Alabama to call me 'Mister' in a courtroom." Later, when a supporter asked why he started using racist messages, Wallace replied, "You know, I tried to talk about good roads and good schools and all these things that have been part of my career, and nobody listened. And then I began talking about niggers, and they stomped the floor."

I wouldn't mind a bit of Huey Long in 'em. He reminds me of Fidel Castro: you may not like his tactics, but you have to admit he was a lot better for his people than his opponents.
