There may yet be justice in this world

12 o'clock, August 7, 2006

Some of you may remember the appalling behavior of the Gretna, LA police department in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina last year. Now a grand jury is going to investigate.

Now, they may yet stack that grand jury with the spiritual descendants of David Duke and Huey Long, but still, we can hope.

Apologies to Huey Long. I don’t know who I was thinking of. (George Wallace?) Well spotted, Will.

I wouldn't mind a bit of Huey Long in 'em. He reminds me of Fidel Castro: you may not like his tactics, but you have to admit he was a lot better for his people than his opponents.

Yeah, Huey Long was the crook you wanted to vote for, along with Edwin Edwards, because the other choices we so appalling.

Great blog.

To show you I know too damn much about Southern politicans, I'd rather have George Wallace than David Duke, too. Wallace was an interesting figure, fairly progressive before white southerners wanted strong racist leaders, and I think his final apologies to blacks was sincere. Here's a bit from Wikipedia that rings true to me:

Wallace rose to power on the politics of racism, but he was not simply a racist. A lawyer recalls, "Judge George Wallace was the most liberal judge that I had ever practiced law in front of. He was the first judge in Alabama to call me 'Mister' in a courtroom." Later, when a supporter asked why he started using racist messages, Wallace replied, "You know, I tried to talk about good roads and good schools and all these things that have been part of my career, and nobody listened. And then I began talking about niggers, and they stomped the floor."

Will, so would I (I've seen that quote before). Spiritual descendants of Wallace’s followers, might have made more sense.
