Something other than either

2 o'clock, July 21, 2006

From a link in a Cosmic Variance comment thread comes the BBC’s Your sex i.d. profile.

My score, on a scale from 100% “female” to 100% “male”?

Zero. Of course, nobody who’s posted about it on CV has gotten anything other than zero or fifty.

It’s like a long and involved LJ quiz, only it doesn’t generate a fancy block of HTML for you to blog. Therefore, this ugly list (below the cut, ’cause it’s ugly.

Update: Via Anna FDD, this much shorter QuizFarm version. Anna’s comment “I have yet to find somebody who scored something other than ‘Either’.” (In honor of which I’ve renamed this post.)

    • Angles: 18/20
      • Average score for men: 15.1/20
      • Average score for women: 13.3/20
      • If you scored 18-20: You have more of a male brain.”
Comments: I started cheating once I figured out I could compare the lines based on the anti-aliasing jaggies.
    • Spot the difference: 64%
      • Average score for men: 39%
      • Average score for women: 46%
      • If you scored between 34-66%: You may have a balanced male-female brain.”
Comments: From which one can deduce that most women “may have a balanced male-female brain.”
    • Clasped hands: Left thumb on top.
      • Left thumb on top This suggests the right half of your brain is dominant. Some studies theorise that as a right brain dominant person, you may excel in visual, spatial and intuitive processes.”
Comments: And this has what to do with gender exactly?
    • Empathizing: 11/20
      • Average score for men: 7.9/20
      • Average score for women: 10.6/20
Comments: I’m just a nice guy.

      • Average score for women: 8/20
Comments: I’m organized, but not that organized.
    • Eyes, judging emotions by: 6/10
      • Average score for men: 6.6/10
      • Average score for women: 6.6/10
Comments: At least I didn’t fall for the “she’s fantasizing about me!” trap. Again, where’s the gender?
    • Finger length, ratio of index to ring fingers: 0.88 (right), 0.96 (left)
      • Average ratio for men: 0.982
      • Average ratio for women: 0.991
Comments: Either the right side of my body was exposed to a hell of a lot of testosterone in the womb, or I just suck at measuring.
    • Faces: Your choices suggest you prefer more feminine faces. Comments: Go figure.
    • 3D shapes: 11/12
      • Average score for men: 8.2/12
      • Average score for women: 7.1/12
      • “If you scored 10-12: Are you an engineer or do you have a science background?”
Comments: No, I just had a hell of a lot of Lego when I was growing up.
    • Words: You associated 14 words with grey and you named nine words that mean happy.
      • Average score for men: 11.4 words total
      • Average score for women: 12.4 words total

      • “If you produced 6-10 words: Most people in this range have a female-type brain.”
Comments: If you produced a number that’s actually in the range most people score, what are you then? A freak of nature? Also: 11.4-12.4 words total? Jesus, you people suck.
    • Ultimatum: If you had to split £50 with someone, you said you would demand £25.
      • Men have demanded £25.80 on average

      Comments: Show me the gender!

I rate as female on the second quiz. The BBC one I haven't finished yet as I don't know where I keep rulers/measuring tape/etc.

Huh, I got female on the second quiz as well.

—— Heather Shaw, 11:10 PM, Sunday, July 23, 2006

Honestly, that Ultimatum test? Most people I know offered 25. It might be a binary discriminator, but I don't think the relevant values are "male" and "female."

(I didn't score as "either," either.)

—— Jackie M., 9:39 AM, Monday, July 24, 2006

I appear to be gender-neutral as well.

—— Dave Schwartz, 1:02 PM, Monday, July 24, 2006

On the BBC quiz, I scored 25 on the male side. I scored above the average for both genders in all the tests, but yet ended up male. Hmm... On the Quiz Farm, I scored "either" with the female ranking as the lowest.

I'm not male, by the way.

Hey - thanks for your detailed comments question by question on this test! I think the main thing this test demonstrated was that these type of tests are fairly random in the results and cannot be taken seriously. Doesn't mean that we can't have fun with them though! Just don't draw any conclusions from the results...

—— JoAnne, 10:03 PM, Tuesday, July 25, 2006

You’re welcome! Yeah, I particularly liked how the breakdowns of the answers made nonsense of several of the questions, at least as predictors of gender...
