History is made to seem unfair4 o'clock, May 11, 2004California: Clear, winds gusting to 20mph, highs in the mid-70s, deceptive wind chill making it easy to forget you’re spending all day in the sun. With a little luck my new forehead and ears will be ready by WisCon. Saw Brandon, Rob, Heather, Tim, Jed, Mom, Carolyn, and “Van Helsing.” Drank a ten-dollar cup of kopi luwak at the Bean Street Cafe in San Mateo. (It was okay.) Ate some excellent Mexican food. Bought too many books. Didn’t get enough sleep.
I remember this defense I should move back. |

Yeah, you should! And the wind chill thing is only in some places. Elsewhere we have nice sensible warm sun. |
I don't drink coffee, but I've always been intrigued by kopi luwak. Sadly, nobody local has any, and I don't want to order a bunch of beans online that I would never drink. What'd you think of "Van Helsing?" |
I’m not enough of a coffee connoisseur to really give kopi luwak a fair assessment, I think. Maybe if I’d had it as espresso, since that’s what I normally drink, rather than as drip coffee. I thought “Van Helsing” was very bad, but in a highly entertaining way. And I think Richard Roxburgh (Dracula) is definitely going places — he’s joined Jason Isaacs and Christopher Eccleston on my list of fortyish Commonwealth actors to watch. |

Jed — if I could figure out a way to get a job down there without moving first . . . |
Dave - I dunno if drinking it as espresso would have helped. Kona and JBM don't make particularly impressive espressos; the smooth-and-vaguely-inoffensive taste they bring to the brewed cup doesn't translate as well to espresso. I suspect Kopi Luwak would be the same. |

What Jed said. ;) |
Jed, Brandon - I don't believe it. Anywhere near the bay itself, wind seems to be standard issue. Half the time I can't even go on a bike ride without getting blown over. |
While what you say is true, there's plenty of areas around the Bay where the winds are much milder than that. |
Now you're making me homesick for California. |
Sorry. :) |
The sip of coffee I had was better than 'ok'; it was a comparable cup of coffee to a good kona.
A good kona does not cost $300/lb.
'Overrated' is, I think, the word. :)
