Slush report #5

6 o'clock, January 31, 2004

As of this morning: 66 contributors, 383,000 words.

Best yet: the cover letter advertising “I have followed the guidelines”, attached to a manuscript full of single-spaced Helvetica. To be fair, the writer’s probably talking about abbreviated guidelines published in some market newsletter, but still, it made me laugh.

Comments

Next time I send you a submission, I'm going to start my letter with:
Dear Mr. Moles: I followed your submission guidelines to the letter.
This will be written in Baskerville Old Face, 10pt. ;^)

Since it's on Boing Boing I'm sure you'll see this anyway, but just in case:

US bans time-honored typeface

In an internal memorandum distributed on Wednesday, the [US State] department declared "Courier New 12" - the font and size decreed for US diplomatic documents for years - to be obsolete and unacceptable after February 1.

"In response to many requests and with a view to making our written work easier to read, we are moving to a new standard font: 'Times New Roman 14'," said the memorandum.

I tell you, this country’s going to hell in a handbasket.
