Figure 1. Hurricane Isabel at 19:15 UTC, 15 September 03.

That Coriolis force is some crazy stuff. All of you between the Bahamas and, well, Lake Erie, good luck.

We've got water, charcoal, bread, milk, peanut butter, and batteries here in Raleigh. Bring it, Isabel!

Don't forget the Twinkies, Mike. Those can live through nuclear devastation. I got my case of them yesterday.

What I like best about the pictures and diagrams of Isabel is that the curves often seem to follow the curves of nearby land masses, often giving the illusion that the hurricane is sucking in all the nearby land.

Jed - implies a few things about the history of those land masses, eh?

I am selfishly glad this one didn't come through the Gulf. It's looking nasty. Good luck, guys.

My mom and siblings are in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and they've decided to stay in the area (well, my mom *has* to stay, anyway -- she's a paramedic, so she gets to pick the bodies out of the trees after the storm blows over). Hope they make it okay...

Oh, and my lovely wife bought beer. Can't have a good hurricane w/o a 12 of Coors Light.
