Depressing

1 o'clock, May 16, 2003

Not the facts themselves, which are great for Pfc. Lynch* and, really, for one’s opinion of humanity in general. But knowing how the military and the media over here have spun it — yes, depressing.

This, by the way, is why I try to stay away from TV.

* Don’t get me started on the persistent habit in the press of referring to her as “Private Jessica,” or even just “Jessica.”

I’d like to think you’re kidding, but I know better.

My feelings on the news reporting are stronger than I would have expected them to be. It's not just the "it's demeaning and rude to call her Jessica instead of Pvt. Lynch"; there's also the knowledge that if (a) my brother had been taken hostage in Afghanistan, and (b) the press insisted on referring to him as "Private Brendan", I would have gone ballistic.

It was so not OK.

I won’t ask how you’d feel about “Brennie,” then. :)

That exploding sound you just heard was me trying to load a nineteenth-century british musket imported from Afghanistan. :P

Ouch.

Now you understand the importance of proper drill.
