And now, a meme

From Gwenda and Barzak:

Turn to page 123 in your work-in-progress. (If you haven’t gotten to page 123 yet, then turn to page 23. If you haven’t gotten there yet, then get busy and write page 23.) Count down four sentences and then instead of just the fifth sentence, give us the whole paragraph.

So:

From the bio-suit comes a voice, speaking in Arabic: “When they meet, one of them turns his face away from the other, and the other turns his face from the former. The better of the two will be the one who greets the other first.” It’s a man’s baritone, with a somehow old-fashioned accent, and it sounds like a recording.

(Only, this is actually from page 164. Which is page 23 of Part 2. Because when I finished Part 1 I opened a new document and restarted the formulas in my projected-time-to-completion spreadsheet so I wouldn’t get any extra credit for getting Part 1 done on time. And also because the relevant paragraph of page 123 of Part 1 is boring and I’m a cheater.)

  1. Benjamin Rosenbaum Says:

Sort of reminiscent of chapter 67 of the Tao Te Ching…?

  2. Maureen McQ Says:

It’s okay to cheat in this case.

So how much farther have you got to go?

  3. David Moles Says:

Ben, it’s from the (a?) hadith.

Maureen, I’m a bit over 40,000 words in, so I should be half done, but the 40,000-word mark was supposed to come at the end of Part 3 instead of halfway through Part 2, so I’m guessing it’s more like a third. Still hoping to have a first complete draft done by October, but we’ll see.
