What I was wrong about in March 2003 (updated)

Via Kieran Healy at Crooked Timber, a meme:

  1. I thought I’d be going to watch the World Kendo Championships in Glasgow, which I didn’t. (And I was wrong to decide not to attend WisCon!)
  2. I was wrong about the scope of the Newdow decision, although I did post a correction.
  3. I mistook J-Walker (now defunct, alas) for a spambot address harvester.

Sadly, I was right about quite a few other things.

Update: Okay, now I remember why I stopped making the sorts of political posts I used to make when I first got started. There’s no news here. I’m turning comments off before this turns into another trivializing cynical kvetch cycle.

Besides, there are better blogs for that.

Oh! And here I’d been assuming that it was just a bad combination of genetics, hormones, and bad research advising that’s been keeping me on anti-depressants for most of the last five years.

  2. David Moles Says:

There, now doesn’t that make you feel better?

  3. Jackie M. Says:

    *sob*

  4. Gwenda Says:

What do you mean NOT COMING TO WISCON?

Oh, wait, in 2003. That already happened, so that’s okay.

  5. David Moles Says:

It’s not a mistake I intend to repeat.

  6. Mary Anne Mohanraj Says:

What makes me sad about that is this:

“can you honestly say that even a half-baked, fledgling democratic attempt could possibly be *worse* than Saddam’s brutal police state?” — Derek James

And David responded, “Of course not.”

When in fact, it’s looking like for the average person living in the country, life actually is notably worse now than it was under Saddam. Much more likelihood of getting randomly killed, never mind all the ways in which the cities are falling apart. Gods. Somedays, I just can’t believe we did this.

  7. David Moles Says:

Yeah, unfortunately, nobody ever made that half-baked fledgling democratic attempt; we just shipped over a lot of Iran-Contra veterans and Heritage Foundation flacks.

  8. Matt Hulan Says:

Golly, I hear life’s pretty good now for the Kurds. In fact, if you’re a Kurd, you probably owe it to yourself to give Iraq a try! It’s probably better than Turkey, anyway. WAY better than it was under Saddam.

That’s actually a side-effect of the Bush Doctrine I didn’t anticipate, that it would improve anything for anyone.

Too bad about the Sunnis, Shiites, and, say, American veterans. Or for that matter any American who gives a fig about civil liberties.

    But, hey! Kurdistan now!
